E-biz initiatives will be IT execs' key focus this year

Marianne Kolbasuk McGee, InformationWeek, January 3, 20

Now that the Year 2000 issue has come and gone, IT organizations are ready to start on new projects. In a recent InformationWeek Research survey, most stated that their IT budgets would increase for this year. Those who responded to the survey believe that their budgets will increase in the following areas: New products or technology purchases, salaries and benefits, and E-business and Internet solutions. The survey goes on to say what technologies/products these IT organizations would most likely purchase in 2000. Most responded that they would purchase PCs, Web-development tool/products, Web server software, network storage, e-commerce, and Web/intranet to legacy integration tools/products.

Agencies Add Mainframes For Web Apps

Mike Koller, INTERNETWEEK, Dec 27, 1999

Instead of moving away from mainframes, many companies are using them to support their new e-business applications. According to IBM, Government agencies are the most recent groups to use mainframes to deploy their Internet and Intranet applications. One federal and two state agencies have recently stated that they will use mainframes to run their retirement, benefits and employment programs on IBM's system 390 mainframes. The government agencies want to add new applications to their existing data. S/390 allows them the ability to easily write and test and run applications. According to analysts, the increased use of mainframes could stem from a number of factors. S/390's versatility, reliability and scalability are all taken into consideration. Also, mainframes allow much room for growth and many agencies and companies may already own these systems.

BMC Developers Connection? Presented by Jeff Walpole, BMC Software

It seems like only yesterday when BMC Software announced the PATROL Developers Network (PDN). We thought that was revolutionary. BMC has out done themselves again. Come and join us for the latest and greatest developer’s helper – the Developers Connection. This new program has all the tools we need to build custom KMs in minutes flat. I saw the presentation a few months back and was very impressed. BMC has created a graphical user interface in the form of wizards to help us with developing our custom KMs. This is essential for all PATROL Knowledge Module developers.

Toolkit for SNMP/Rapid SNMP Interface Development! Presented by Eric Anderson, BMC Software

Eric Anderson is the lead developer for the Developer Connection Wizards that are going to revolutionize the Knowledge Module development processes. Why spend days and weeks building KMs when you can spend minutes using this easy to use graphical user interface built by BMC Software to help us meet our tight development schedules. I have to say, thank you, to BMC Software for this great initiative and excellent implementation. If you write KMs this is a must see! One of the most asked about and widely misunderstood, features of PATROL, is support for SNMP. BMC offers application instrumentation via the brand new PATROL Toolkit for SNMP, available through the PATROL Developers Connection. The Toolkit for SNMP provides both SNMP master agent and client agents via smux, it supports, via PSL SNMP management, generation of traps. The Toolkit for SNMP also contains a wizard to rapidly convert MIB definitions to PATROL KM quickly providing management of SNMP devices. This session will provide a technical overview of SNMP support in PATROL with code samples and on the fly generation of a PATROL KM to manage a SNMP service. Additionally we will dive into the structure of the dynamic MIB that PATROL offers and how discuss writing code to handle the OID changes that the dynamic MIB presents. A technical paper documenting SNMP support in PATROL will be distributed at the meeting.

Tips and Tricks for Developing a KM Presented by Brenda Kirkpatrick, Starbound Software

I will use the MetaFrame Knowledge Module, which monitors and manages Citrix MetaFrame servers, to show Tips and Tricks for developing PATROL Knowledge Modules. The presentation will include a how-to build multi-level application classes, how-to use the psl response function to create graphical user interfaces and creating annotation points.

E-Business/E-Availability Presented by a Pete Distefano, BMC Software

Take the internet out of our day to day lives and we won’t have jobs! I can’t imagine going even working 1 day without the internet available to me and my co-workers. BMC Software recognizes the importance of the internet and they have several E-Business Solutions to monitor and manage our internet and intranet services. Let’s spend some time understanding BMC Software’s E-Business Solution and the components that are used to implement E-Business reliability. Pete is going to give us an understanding of the E-Business solutions and options for PATROL.

MS SQL Server KM Presented by Dan Giannascoli, BMC Software

This is just one of the many components in BMC Software's E-Business Solution. BMC is renown for there database KMs. BMC’s database KMs are the best in the industry and the MS SQL Server KM is no exception. Let BMC show you how to get the most out of your MS SQL Servers.

PATROL Internet Knowledge Modules Presented by Dan Giannascoli, BMC Software

Tired of being woken up at night by a pager? Sick of being paged 2 minutes after you start your lunch break? If you are responsible for maintaining an intranet, internet, or both then you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see how PATROL can keep you up and running and silence your pesky pager. BMC Software monitors ftp, http, www, and other internet and web applications to provide us with a robust tool for monitoring our internet services. If your business depends on the internet or intranet, which most of our businesses do, this KM and presentation is of paramount importance for you and your company. Don’t miss this or you may be disconnected from the most vital tool in your computing environment.

Open Discussions

We created the Eastern Regional PATROL Users Group in order to provide a forum to exchange ideas and talk about woes and successes. I am hoping that you come to the meeting with questions or success stories in mind. BMC representatives, knowledgeable members of the ERPUG, and myself will be available during this 30 minute session to try and answers any questions you may have about PATROL.

A Message from ERPUG President… Brenda Kirkpatrick

We have had great turnouts for our Eastern Regional PATROL Users Group (ERPUG) meetings! BMC Software is committed to having someone from BMC Education and Services and/or BMC Software Consultant group at all the meetings. This is great for us because we receive exceptional education at a substantially discounted rate.

I believe we learned a lot from our presenters over the past couple of years. We shared antidotes, woes, and success stories, which is the purpose of the ERPUG. I couldn't be more pleased with the group. I receive requests for ERPUG membership on a daily basis, which tells me that we really needed this kind of forum. For the members who have been in the ERPUG in Nov, 1998, yearly membership dues are due on or by Feb 16, 2000.

We would like to include PATROL-related articles in the newsletter from users like you. Please send articles electronically to snmp4u@kirkpatrickconsulting.com or by US mail to Brenda Kirkpatrick, ERPUG, 3222 Graham Road, Falls Church, VA 22042. Articles will, for the most part, be printed unedited; therefore,

They should be copy-ready. If you need any help with writing an article, just ask. We have extend the PATROL umbrella to include integrated products such as Remedy, CuraMessage, Network Node Manager, Spectrum, PeopleSoft, SAP R/3, HP/ITO, so articles on these products are equally as welcome.

Keep in mind that the presentation agendas are strictly based on comments from members like you. We count the number of requests for each topic and create the agenda based on the requests. If you want to see a presentation then vote either at the meeting, via email, via US mail or by calling the ERPUG.

Please send questions for a "Dear ERPUG" column. Responses will be both e-mailed to you and included in the ERPUG Newsletter. If you have an answer for a commonly asked question, please send both question and answer to "Dear ERPUG".

If you have any ideas for regular columns, please send ideas and/or columns to me. If you have an

idea, but don't wish to author a column, or vice versa, please contact me at (703) 698-0930 and maybe, together, we can find a solution.

The ERPUG Newsletter is picture-friendly. I encourage any and all pictures that can be made available, from pictures of authors to spectacular consoles. Pictures in .tif format are best for me, but we'll use anything from electronic to hard-copy.

ERPUG dates, meeting agendas, previous meeting agendas, newsletters, and much more can be found on our web site www.kirkpatrickconsulting.com/erpur/erpug.htm.

You can also get to the ERPUG web pages by going to www.bmc.com/Events/Users Groups/Eastern Regional PATROL Users Group where there is a link to our pages.

I hope to see all of you on Feb 16th!!

"Dear ERPUG" Brenda Kirkpatrick, Starbound Software

Q: I'm running on NT 4.0 and I don't have a C drive. PATROL won't run! Can you help?

A: Yes, you need to set 2 environment variables, under control panel->system, add the 2 variables: TMP_PATROL and PATROL_CACHE. For example, you might have TMP_PATROL = E:\tmp\patrol and PATROL_CACHE = E:\users\patrol.

Q: I'm was trying to install PATROL 3.3 on for NT on a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) which is actually a stand-alone machine that I use for demonstration purposes. The software gave me an account error and aborted the installation. Do you know what the problem is?

A: Yes, you need to have your PDC network card in the machine even if when you aren’t connected to a network. PATROL is then satisfied that the domain can be found and will continue the installation. After the installation is successful, I should warn you that you will need to keep the network card in the machine to connect the Console to the agent.

Q: BMC has added Solutions to the Installation Menu. How do Solution bundles work during the installation process?

A: When you choose a solution the appropriate underlying KMs will be chosen for you. I always check the list to make sure that I get all the KMs I want before I continue the installation.

Q: Have you seen the latest and greatest Lotus Notes KM? Are the new features worth the investment of upgrading?

A: I have experience with the new Lotus Notes KM. It is a great improvement over the older versions of the Lotus Notes KM. It is well worth the time and effort to upgrade. The features that have been added make the KM a must have.

Q: I have heard that you can compile a psl. Why would I want to compile psl? Also, how do I compile a psl?

A: One reason to compile psl code is to optimize the code so it runs faster since it doesn’t need to be interpreted during run. However, the code will have to be installed on each of the agents and the console due to the nature of the psl compiled code. To compile psl use the <PSL> command. An example of compiling a metaframe discovery script and creating a metaframe discovery binary (compiled code) is as follows: psl metaframedisc.psl –o metaframedisc.bin

Q: What does the Patrol Developers Network offer?

A: There are over 250 KMs that can be obtained through the PDN. The PDN Catalog is printed quarterly and has a wide range of offerings. There are many PDN KMs available at competitive prices. The PDN, however, has been replaced with the Developers Connection. There are 2 presentations around this topic and an article at the end of this newsletter which should help clarify this statement.

Well there are so many good questions that I’m afraid I will have to wait until the next newsletter to answer them all. I apologize to anyone who was hoping for an answer to his or her question in this newsletter. Please feel free to call.

They can also be independent developers, consultants, implementation partners, VARs or ISVs who are developing products that complement BMC Software’s offerings.

For all categories of developers, membership in the BMC Software Developer Connection program offers the following benefits:

* to be added in the future

Developer Connection evolved from the highly successful BMC Software PATROL¨ Developer Network (PDNª). Launched in September of 1997, the PDN was an important venue used by outside developers to create products that integrated with BMC Software’s PATROL product line.

With the October 1999 launch of Developer Connection, the PDN no longer exists. Whereas PDN revolved around PATROL products, the mission of Developer Connection is to eventually encompass all of BMC Software’s product lines.

Membership in the BMC Software Developer Connection is valuable to different groups of developers for these reasons:

For developers who are selling their integration(s), it:

For customers who are buying BMC Software’s products, it:

The BMC Software Developer Connection program has more than 1,000 members with 50% in North America, 12% in Europe, 12% in the Pacific Rim and the rest throughout the world.
