Cool Features of PATROL® Presented by Brenda Kirkpatrick, Kirkpatrick Consulting, Inc. PATROL is a completely cool management tool! Well, I think so. Who am I? I am the President and Founder of the very first PATROL Users Group. I have been working with PATROL since PATROL 3.0 beta version, which is about 7 years, and I love PATROL. My goal, it’s simple, I’d love for you to love PATROL the way that I do. I think my goal is a simple one. Join us for our first session of the day and learn features, tricks, and techniques that will show you just how cool PATROL is! This presentation is for novice and experts alike. Bring your hard questions; this is the place to get answers from me, BMC Software, one of our many ERPUG members and PATROL experts! |
|
CONTROL-D® Presented by Rick Palmer, BMC Software Rick Palmer has an extensive background in IT and computer engineering. He has been a computer professional for over 22 years! He started out on MVS and VM proving he’s been at this a long time, and his love for the computing environment is still strong. He started working with INCONTROL products 5 years ago. He is one of the great engineers that BMC got when they acquired New Dimension, a few years back. He is a technical guru when it comes to the INCONTROL products and he wants to mentor us. Bring your technical questions because, after speaking with Rick for a few minutes, I can tell, he is able to answer even the hardest INCONTROL questions. Well, enough about Rick, what is Control-D, it is an awesome product from BMC Software which allows management all your output needs and report generation requirements. Manage your printers, fax, and emails from a centralized location. Minimizes your printing and distribution costs, get Control-D today! |
|
Control-SA® Presented by Rick Palmer, BMC Software One of the coolest products I’ve seen come out of BMC Software is Control-SA. How many mornings have you spent on the phone with the help desk resetting your enterprise wide passwords? You take a vacation and you spend a day or two getting all your passwords reset! Make a mistake 3 times and your wasting hours trying to get your password reset on your workstation so you can begin your day. With Control-SA those days are history! Control-SA provides a simplified management package for all enterprise security systems from a central management platform. It allows you to reset your own passwords! All you need to do is remember your dog’s name, your favorite color, the color of your Mom’s eyes, etc. Control-SA is an essential element in our multi-user multi-password control, and distributed environment. Find out how your organization can prevent hours of lost time using Control-SA. And, I must add, Control-SA is totally awesome! |
|
Control M® Presented by a Rick Palmer, BMC Software Control M allows us to have control over the scheduling of critical jobs, processes, and applications. Across multiple platforms in the enterprise from a single point of management. The product's proven success record maximizes data center hardware and software investments over multiple platforms, merging new and traditional technologies to effectively manage heterogeneous environments. CONTROL-M supports over 20 platforms, including OS/390, Unix, Microsoft Windows NT, AS/400, SAP R/3, Tivoli, Tandem and Unisys 2200. Unlike some other process scheduling products, Control-M will allow restarts of long job processing queues in the middle. No more starting the day over. I don’t know about you but I’ve yet to learn how to turn back time! Come and learn how to cut the management of your product control jobs down to a route and manageable set of steps from a centralized console! |
|
Dashboard Presented by MimyConnie Indra, BMC Software When BMC Software bought Perform SA who specialized in Performance monitoring and management tools, they got more then just software and company assets. They got great technical expertise like MimyConnie Indra. Mimy was one of the chief engineers of the Dashboard and Visualis products at Perform SA, which was acquired by BMC Software last year. Mimy can answer all of our most detailed questions. The ERPUG prides itself on bring in the best of the best to present to our group and Mimy is no exception! We have asked Mimy to give us a hands-on demonstration of the Dashboard and Visualis products. Mimy's can do attitude, attention to detail, and satisfied customer focus, are just what we look for in presenters for our group. Dashboard and Visualis are easy to use applications which provide a Centric Network Management view don’t miss these presentation! |
|
Visualis Presented by MimyConnie Indra, BMC Software We have the great pleasure of seeing MimyConnie Indra present Dashboard and Visualis. She is a renowned expert in the area of Performance monitoring and management tools with a flare for the user or presentation layer. Visualis, along with Dashboard provide a real-time visually astounding traffic flow tool for your network. These products aid in the isolation of network component issues and traffic bottlenecks through traffic performance statistics. After problem recognition, a solution can be tested using a unique playback capability that is truly visionary. You can also hear about the advanced features to be released in the June 2002 timeframe: alarm management, map animation, graphical containers, trap handling, and PEM integration. |
|
Open Discussions We created the Eastern Regional PATROL Users Group in order to provide a forum to exchange ideas and talk about woes and successes. I am hoping that you come to the meeting with questions or success stories in mind. BMC representatives, knowledgeable members of the ERPUG, and myself will be available during this 30-minute session to try and answers any questions you may have about PATROL. |

We are moving…Change your most "FAVORITE" browser link from: Snmp4u~/midmaine.com to kirkpatrickconsulting.com->EPRUG |
Yes, we are moving our ERPUG Web pages
. We no longer want to pay to maintain the site that was originally created while I was livingin Maine. Change your favorite browser link from snmp4u~/midmaine.com to kirkpatrickconsulting.com->EPRUG. We are anticipating the cut
over to be March 2002 so change it soon!
Attending the February 27th ERPUG meeting entitles you to receive a free DevCon SDK. Please provide your shipping address, company
name, contact name, email and phone number to Brenda and BMC will process and ship you a free SDK. See the Developer Connection article
In this newsletter for details.
We have had great turnouts for our Eastern Regional PATROL Users Group (ERPUG) meetings! BMC Software is committed to having someone
from BMC Education and Services and/or BMC Software Consultant group at all the meetings. This is great for us because we receive exceptional
education at a substantially discounted rate.
I believe we learned a great deal from our presenters over the past five years! We shared antidotes, woes, and success stories, which is the
purpose of the ERPUG. I couldn't be more pleased with the group. I receive requests for ERPUG membership on a daily basis, which tells me
that we really needed this kind of forum. We are, starting with our February 27th meeting, adding the INCONTROL products to our agenda. We
feel that PATROL service providers, integrators, and users can benefit from in-depth knowledge of all the BMC Software products and the INCONTROL
product line is no exception.
We would like to include PATROL-related articles in the newsletter. Please send articles to erpug@kirkpatrickconsulting.com. Articles will, for the
most part, be printed unedited; therefore, they should be copy-ready. If you need any help with writing an article, just ask. We extend the PATROL
umbrella to include integrated products such as Remedy, Network Node Manager, Spectrum, Netcool, PeopleSoft, SAP R/3, HP/ITO, so articles on
these products are equally as welcome.
Keep in mind that the presentation agendas are strictly based on comments from members like you. It’s a democracy. We count the number of
requests for each topic and create the agenda based on the requests. If you want to see a presentation on a particular topic then vote either at the
meeting, via email, via US mail or by calling the ERPUG. Please send questions for our "Dear ERPUG" column. Responses will be both e-mailed to
you and included in the ERPUG Newsletter. If you have an answer for a commonly asked question, please send both question and answer to "Dear ERPUG".
If you have any ideas for regular columns, please send ideas and/or columns to me. If you have an idea, but don't wish to author a column, or vice
versa, please contact me at (703)968-8844 and maybe, together, we can find a solution. The ERPUG Newsletter is picture-friendly. I encourage any
picture submission, from pictures of authors to spectacular consoles. Pictures in .tif format are best for me, but we'll use anything from electronic to hard copy.
ERPUG dates, meeting agendas, previous meeting agendas, newsletters, and much more can be found on our web site:
www.kirkpatrickconsulting.com->EPRUG
You can also get to the ERPUG web pages by going to www.bmc.com/Events/UsersGroups/Eastern Regional PATROL Users Group.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT OUR NEXT EXCITING MEETING!

Q: When a parameter threshold is crossed, the warning event will be sent out and the parameter will remain in a warning state. How can I get an event to go out every minute instead of just once? |
|
A: The underlying strategy used by PATROL is to send 1 event for each triggering of an alarm or warning. However, you have many options available to you to get more than 1 event to be sent. You can add a recovery action which stays in a loop sending events until some condition is meet, you can change the event catalog or create a custom event with Notification and Escalation events, to name a few ways to continue to send events. |
|
Q: I understand that to get my custom Knowledge Module through certification I need to have the commit function working for my KM. My question is how do I get the commit function to work for my custom Knowledge Module? |
|
A: BMC has created a method to help custom KM developers commit their code when the commit option is chosen. I will show you using the TruCluster KM for PATROL. We created a file named: CMPQ_extrafiles.psl. in the file we put all the routines needed using the following format: #lib "CMPQ_abouttcs.lib" #lib "CMPQ_clusterdiscovery.lib" #lib "CMPQ_appstartmenu.lib" … (all library or binary files used by the KM) Then in the KM create a parameter named ExtraFilesList The parameter needs to load the file containing all the libraries. For the TruCluster KM for PATROL we have the following: LOAD "CMPQ_extrafiles.psl" |
|
Q: I tried to get the Sybase instances created using the following command: get("/SYBASE/instances"). The response I received back from PATROL was SYBASE. Okay, what am I doing wrong? |
|
A: The answer you received back from PATROL was correct. The instance under /SYBASE is SYBASE. Try issuing the following command: get("/SYBASE_SQL_SERVER/instances") to see the instances created under the database instances for SYBASE. |
|
Q: I have heard that you can compile a psl routine. Why would I want to compile a psl routine? Also, how do I compile a psl routine? |
|
A: One reason to compile psl code is to optimize the code so it runs faster at run time. However, the code will have to be installed on each of the agents and the console due to the nature of the psl compiled code. To compile psl use the <PSL> command. An example of compiling a TruCluster discovery script and creating a TruCluster discovery binary (compiled code) is as follows: psl CMPQ_clusterdiscovery.psl –o CMPQ_clusterdiscovery.bin. This compiles or interprets the CMPQ_clusterdiscovery.psl and stores the result in the CMPQ_clusterdiscovery.bin file. |
|
Well there are so many good questions that I’m afraid I will have to wait until the next newsletter to answer them all. I apologize to anyone who was hoping for an answer to his or her question in this newsletter. Please feel free to call. |

BMC Software Learning Universe |
![]()
Learning Universe has been heralded as "the learning event" of the year among BMC customers and partners. Held in Orlando, Florida last year,
LU was able to attract over 1100 people to three intense days of education, peer networking, and entertainment for BMC, our partners, and our customers.
This year, LU is breaking new ground by leaving Orlando and going into the regions where the customers are located. Instead of one large event,
LU is being broken up into eight regional events for 2002. As such Learning Universe will be held in Toronto, Washington D.C., New York City,
Atlanta, Chicago, and three other TBD locations in the Northeast, California and Texas. The format will remain largely the same. It will be a time
to learn, network with peers, and to have potential customers interact with existing customers and BMC executives. Visit our BMC Software’s web
site soon at www.bmc.com for more details on this upcoming event!

incredible offer and how much is it? Believe it or not, join the BMC Software’s Developer Connection for FREE and start reaping the benefits today!
Simple go to www.devcon.bmc.com, register for an account, and get connected with the most experienced and renowned KM developers, worldwide.
It’s an offer you can’t afford to refuse.
The most recent success story at Kirkpatrick Consulting, Inc.(KC) is the development of the TruCluster ™ for Knowledge Module PATROL®. TruCluster ™
provides high availability computing for applications such as SAP, Oracle, and any in-house created application. TruCluster™ is a registered trademark
of Compaq Computer Corporation. At KC we were able to build the TruCluster KM in less than 5 months, in large part due to BMC Software’s unparalleled
offering: DevCon. One of the key benefits of the DevCon is the forward thinking and experienced developers at BMC Software. They listen to our needs
and work countless hours to fill these needs. The new Help Utility from BMC is just one example of the awesome offerings from DevCon. We were able to
build the TruCluster KM Help screens in about 4 hours using this awesome new tool. We posted a question on the Web and received the answer within 1/2 hour.
We posted the question: "Do we still need to use RoboHelp to build our TruCluster KM help screens?" We also posted the following question: "Does anyone
know of an easier and cheaper way to build KM help screens other than using RoboHelp?" RoboHelp is around $5,000. The answer came back in no time:
use the FREE Help Utility from BMC Software available via the DevCon. We immediately went to the site, downloaded the product, which took about 5
minutes, ran the installation program, and we completed the entire help screen development effort in less than 4 hours! Kirkpatrick Consulting, Inc. believes
in help so we had over 200 help screens! Due to past metrics we estimated this work to take about 2 ½ weeks just for initial development. The Help Utility
reads the ".km" file directly to build the structure of the help from the KM files! That feature alone saved us days! Also, the tool builds the NT, UNIX, and
HTML versions of the help screens. Click the "Generate Help" and all the files, in all the formats, are generated in 1 second or less! What an incredible time
and money saving offering! We have built hundreds of KMs and help screens using RoboHelp. With this experience we estimated our savings at over $10,000.
This figure doesn’t take into consideration maintenance costs for the TruCluster KM help screens!
Figure 1.1 shows the BMC Software Help Utility incredibly easy to use Graphical User Interface.

Figure 1.1
Figure 1.2 shows the BMC Software Help Utility cross-reference index number editing screen. Duplicate Identifiers are marked in red. This makes it incredibly easy to quickly identify
and fix duplicate index numbers. We also used, extensively, the online email subscription. One answer to one question can parley into hours saved, which in turns means countless
dollars of savings all because of the online email subscription servers via the DevCon. We asked hard questions about event triggering and CPU utilization reduction techniques.
Via the DevCon we are able to tap into some of the most intelligent and knowledge IT management experts all over the world! The answers come from the most experienced developers
at BMC Software, IT industry experts, UNIX, NT, VMS, Oracle, SAP, and all kinds of experts with a myriad of development expertise. Our advice to any KM
developer, novice or expert: Join the DevCon today and gain access to a wealth of knowledge! Even if you are a passive email subscriber and never post any questions,
you will learn so much from others KM developers and PATROL users. If you have comments or questions please feel free to email us at snmp4u@kirkpatrickconsulting.com.
